Cornwall Travelog - opposite the Lizard Peninsula, near the village of Mawnan Smith, are the lovely gardens of Trebah.
The garden rolls down a valley and onto a beach. At end of the garden is a tribute to the American soldiers who left from this beach to fight on the beaches at Omaha on D-Day. There is more information about what happened to them on signs attached to the small building on the beach.
It was Omaha beach where the film 'Saving Private Ryan' was set. The American soldiers suffered terrible casualties; the enemy had been waiting for them.
It must have been strange - disembarking from such a beautiful spot as Trebah and ending up in the hell-hole of destruction which was Omaha beach.
Strange and very sad.
